The Story Behind Our Logo
The unlikely friendship of Finnegan and Milo has quietly become a symbol of the the Inn at Lost River and the Lost River Valley, where adventure and rest live side by side.
When we began shaping the visual identity of the Inn at Lost River, we turned to local artist, and friend, Tobi Dannemiller to help bring that spirit to life. What emerged was more than a logo. It was a reflection of shared values, creative trust, and a deep affection for this place we call home. The fox and mouse were never meant to be mascots alone. They were meant to tell a story.
Finnegan and Milo represent the balance we strive to offer our guests: curiosity and comfort, boldness and belonging. Their unlikely friendship reminds us that connection often begins in unexpected ways. At the Inn at Lost River, that belief shapes everything we do. We hope you leave having discovered something new, and having felt entirely at home.
Residents of the Lost River Valley have long told stories of a certain fox, with a knowing glint in his eye, named Finnegan. He knows every winding trail, hidden overlook, and quiet meadow for miles around. Cranny Crow, Trout Pond, Rockcliff Lake, George Washington National Forest, and even the grounds of the Inn at Lost River are his world.
Finnegan is a wanderer at heart, always quick to chase a horizon, but just as content to linger by the coals of an abandoned campfire when a cool evening settles in. Always by his side is Milo, a winsome little country mouse with a knack for noticing what the world often misses: the joy in the trill of spring peepers, the scent of woodsmoke wafting through cool mountain air, the stillness just before the stars appear over the Appalachian Mountains, and yes, the occasional Signature Cookie crumb dropped along one of our mountain trails. Together they are an unlikely yet inseparable pair.
Finnegan and Milo embody the best of our valley and what we offer here at the Inn at Lost River: a blend of adventure and rest, natural wonder and comfort, balancing the wide world with the quiet moments that enrich our lives, and finding hope, friendship, and community in unlikely places.
While you may never see our valley’s unofficial hosts, you can’t miss their presence: two sets of paw prints leading you toward an awe-inspiring view, a tuft of fur abandoned in a fireside chair that feels just right, and a desire to explore a valley that invites you to wander, to be still, and to enjoy the quiet moments of life with friends, family, and those who make us whole.
